California Hunter Education

It is tough to beat the excitement of a first time hunter or an outdoor enthusiast. Introducing a child into the great outdoors is something that cannot under-valued. To keep the outdoor traditions we love so much, strong – we need a flurry of new participants, and taking your child or any young hunter to a hunter safety clinic or course in 2013 is a great way to do your part. Hunter eduction is a big first step in getting youths hooked on hunting and the outdoors.

In a continued effort to reduce firearm accidents, the State of California requires all first time resident hunters, regardless of age, to complete hunter education training or pass a comprehensive equivalency test before purchasing a hunting license.  Further, some states and countries require a Bow Hunter Education class if you intent to hunt with Archery equipment.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife conducts training throughout the state. Each year approximately 30,000 students complete the state’s ten-hour minimum hunter education course. Statistics show hunter education training is a success.

We offer both the full length 10 hour traditional Hunter Education class as well as the shorter 4 hour Home Study/Internet class, as well as, the Traditional Bow Hunter Education Classes.

California DFG Home Study/On-Line Hunter Education Summary

This 4-hour class lets you rely on your experience, home study and internet pre-study course to prepare. On-line courses are available at HUNTERcourse.com (California), Hunter-Ed.com,  and International Hunter Education Association. The on-line course in itself will not get you a valid hunter education certificate. Once you have completed one of the above on-line courses, you will still need to attend a 4 hour follow-up home study/on-line class with a certified hunter education instructor. Access is permitted to the Home Study and On-line 4 hour follow-up class only after a student has completed the written Home Study or On-line component of the class.

Class objectives:

  • Address questions from internet pre-study course
  • Review of key information
  • Hands-on firearms session (no live fire)
  • Administer Department of Fish & Game Hunter Education Test

Note:

1) The recommended age for attendance in this course is 18 years of age and older. A parent or legal Guardian must accompany any student under the age of 18 so that necessary consents, releases and waivers can  be signed at the beginning of the class.

2) Due to the home study nature of the course, advanced registration is required. Registration will be cut-off when the class limit (10) is reached. Class with less than 3 students will be rescheduled.

3) Students must successfully complete the on-line portion of at least one home study course, print out, and bring to class proof of successful completion.

4) The written test will only be given once. A passing score is 80 percent. This is NOT an easy test. Failure will require registration for a new class.

5) The On-Line Course is intended for hunters with previous experience OR those who are willing to study extra hard on their own. It is recommended that ALL on-line study resources be used:

  • Hunter Course – http://www.huntercourse.com/usa/california
  • Today’s Hunter – http://www.hunter-ed.com/ca
