This clinic is to develop skills and understanding of improving your field communications in austere environments. Theory, practical application and testing of different style antenna solutions will be covered in a practical hands on class as we create/manufacture these different antennas. We will also cover communications principles, report formats and types, encryption, codes, etc… as well as principles to reduce your visibility and emissions footprint.
Dress for the field. Bring: Lunch/snacks, water/fluids. note taking materials (write in the rain pads highly recommended), your radios, compass if you have one )we will provide if not), multi-tool, and field kit. (Field kit may be battle belt/chest rig/plate carrier, day pack/assault pack, anything else you think you would normally have in the field.) A rifle is recommended but not required for measurements.
The reality is that for a radio operator, even an individual rifleman as part of a larger Guerrilla force, he must understand the performance of his antenna in the same way he does his rifle or any other piece of equipment. His life depends on it.
This clinic explores the antenna first from the individual perspective, the antenna attached to the radio, and then from a higher level of capability with both omni-directional and directional transmitting antennas for small unit requirements. This clinic is not intended to be an engineering perspective and the technical data is kept to a minimum so that anyone can grasp the basics of the concepts in an improvised environment.
After building a better antenna, we will also dive into field reports, encryption, codes, etc and see how far we can establish voice communications.
